Captain Marvel #32 Origin of Drax

September 26, 2010

I saw a graded 9.4 go for $90+

Ungraded NM is $30

VF is $10 or so.

A former saxophonist, Arthur Sampson “Art” Douglas and his family were killed by the Titanian Eternal Thanos while driving across the Mojave Desert. Kronos recovered Douglas’ astral form and used it to create a superhuman warrior for the purpose of defeating Thanos. After Thanos was defeated, Drax was eventually killed by a psychic attack from Moondragon.

Years later, Drax was resurrected to once again battle Thanos (also recently resurrected). Drax’s resurrection was not perfect, however; his brain remained damaged from his previous death. After Thanos was defeated a second time, Drax became a member of the Infinity Watch and guardian of the Power Gem.

Adam Warlock, leader of the Watch, shut off Drax’s hunger to kill Thanos when he had the Infinity Gauntlet. However Moondragon accidentally caused some of his memories to resurface, and returned to him his insane hunger to kill Thanos.

The Starlin rendering still is my favorite.

The first Appearance is Iron Man 55 in 1973.

It sells for half the origin issue as the Story is quite confusing with Thanos also first appearing.

Starlin does the art in this, but the Iron Man is a casual player to Starlin’s cosmic yearnings.

Atlas Comics Coming Back?

September 19, 2010

Martin Goodman, the Founder of Marvel Comics, created Atlas Comics. On October 8th, 2010, Jason Goodman, the grandson of Marvel’s Founder, will re-launch Atlas Comics at the New York Comic-Con. The original 1970s Atlas published 23 different comic book titles (for 65 total issues) and a handful of black and white magazines. it was launched in mid-1974 by Marvel Comics’ founder Martin Goodman, and collapsed in mid-1975. It managed to poach a handful of Marvel creators by offering the highest page rates comics had ever seen and ownership rights to creators of characters. Ardden Entertainment publishing revivals of The Grim Ghost and Phoenix as a starting point.

I doubt the $3.99 prices are helping comics. People can pay for winners in a Graphic Novel for $15. Why buy four unproven comics.

I did like the Destructor by Ditko. But it is dated too.

The Pro

September 5, 2010

An outstanding tongue in cheek comic by Garth Ennis in 2002.  Imagine a seedy prostitute getting super powers. then get recruited by the equivalent of the squeaky clean version of the super friends from TV’s cartoon land.

  • Pro Oversized (72 pages, deluxe, oversized and hardcover, November, 2004, ISBN 158240383X)
  • Pro (80 pages, paperback, September 2007, ISBN 1582408505)
  • Pro (72 pages, paperback reprint of Pro Oversized, June 2010, ISBN TBA)

The comic is in trade paper format. It easily can be bought under $10 in used condition.
